Rocket Lidded Box

Not sure you would call this a box, more an urn, who would be happy with an urn shaped like a rocket?

This took some making. It was for a segmented competition. I had never done segmented turning before and this piece was not my first attempt. It took me a while to work out how to cut the segments and assemble them quickly and precisely so most of my time was spent making jigs and designing. Once I had made the tools it all fell into place.

I will do a full how to video on my segmented turning technique at some point.

From the start I wanted to be very sure how the piece was going to turn out. I drew it all in Fusion and produced cutting lists and schematic drawings of how each ring should be made.

Making the rings was quite easy with my newly created segment cutting jig, I was surprised how many there were and how big it was when I stacked all the rings together.

I assembled all the rings not gluing where I wanted the box to split then turned the whole thing.

I designed and printed a jig so I could attach the feet which had been cut by router yes, using a 3D printed jig.

I had several versions of the top, this was my final choice which I wanted to use because it looked much more robust. I did make one with a much finer finial that looked really good but I thought someone would pick it up by it and break it.
